Birse Civils (www.birsecl.co.uk - a Balfour Beatty Company www.balfourbeatty.com/) are kindly letting small groups of Deflections' members watch the demolition and ground preparation works of the new Live Sciences building.
The site has several unique problems. It is next to the Ronald McDonald House ("an independent charity which provides Home from Home accommodation, free of charge, to the families of critically ill children receiving care at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children"), home to critically ill children with compromised immune systems. As such, dust from the demolition works has to be carefully controlled and mitigated. Also, adjacent is the University of Bristol physics department with very sensitive equipment that cannot be disturbed. A fascinating case study for civil engineers!
